Georgia Man Convicted for $16M COVID-19 Unemployment Fraud
A Georgia man was convicted for defrauding millions from unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A federal jury in Albany, Georgia, convicted a Georgia man for defrauding the Georgia Department of Labor of millions in unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The defendant and his co-conspirators orchestrated a scheme where they used stolen identities to submit fraudulent unemployment claims," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti.
The scheme involved using stolen identities to file fraudulent unemployment claims on behalf of a defunct business, Down N Dirty Transportation LLC. This resulted in over $16 million in fraudulent benefits.
The jury found Malcolm Jeffrey guilty of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, facing a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Sentencing is yet to be scheduled.
