A federal grand jury indicted former Augusta State Medical Prison officers Robert Roberson and Marcus Phillips. They are charged with violating an inmate's constitutional rights by ignoring a fire, leading to his death.
The indictment states the officers knew about a smoldering fire in the inmate's cell but did nothing to help. They allegedly left the inmate locked in his cell for hours, resulting in his death from smoke inhalation.
Roberson is also accused of falsifying a logbook to cover up the misconduct.
